Mindfulness can do your mind and body a world of good!

So much of our lives are spent hurrying around—from home to work, from one task to another, to lunch and back, then back home to enjoy a few minutes of time with family before bed. All that “hurrying” can often consume our attention, so much that we fail to be aware of what’s going on around us or even what we’re doing.

But if you can start building the habits of mindfulness, you’ll find you can take back control of your day—and make it a much happier, healthier one!

Here are a few simple mindfulness practices you can start doing every day to turn the busy and stressful into positivity:

Practice Breathing

You’d be amazed how much good the simple act of breathing can do for you!

Studies have proven [1] that deep breathing can purify your body, eliminate toxins, combat stress, calm your nerves, boost your energy levels, enhance digestive function, and even help your cardiovascular system function better.

As you go through your day today, pay attention to your breathing. Focus on taking deep breaths from your diaphragm instead of your chest. When you breathe from your diaphragm, you fill your lungs with fresh air that will oxygenate your blood and give you energy. Make it a point to slow down at least five times today and take a few minutes to regulate your breathing. It’s easy, effortless, and will do wonders to improve brain and body function.

Practice Stillness

With all the hurrying around we do, a few minutes of stillness and silence can make a world of difference.

When you are still, you give your brain and body time to synchronize. Stillness helps to tamp down anxieties, bring important things to mind, or even trigger creative inspirations. You don’t have to spend hours in silent, stone-still meditation every day—even just a minute or two can be huge.

Every hour on the hour, set your watch for three minutes and sit still while it runs. Three minutes of little to no movement, regular breathing, with your eyes closed and your body relaxed. That’s not too hard, and you’ll find it will do wonders to help “re-center” you and focus your thoughts.

Practice Gratitude

There is so much good and positive in your life, but it can often be drowned out by the stressful, negative, and undesirable. If you can look deep, you’ll find that all the positive can help you to see the good around you.

Make it a morning habit to spend at least 1 minute counting your blessings. It may feel odd to do it aloud, but it’s okay to do it in your mind. For 60 uninterrupted seconds, go over everything in your house, your life, and your family that you have to be thankful for. It doesn’t matter if they’re the same things you were grateful for yesterday—repeat them again today, because they’re still good.

Over time, this will do wonders to help you see the good in your life, and you’ll start looking for more positivity and gratitude in everything around you.

Practice Attentiveness

With everything you have to do every day, all the various tasks, devices, and people demanding your attention, it’s easy to miss the small things. That’s why it’s so important that you practice attentiveness and being mindful to your surroundings.

Two or three times a day, stop what you’re doing and make it a point to notice everything around you. Take in the colors, details, and textures of the furniture, carpets, walls, ceilings, curtains, and windows. Or, look out your window and pay attention to the trees and plants outside, or your neighbors’ houses. Look for small details you’d never noticed before.

This practice of attentiveness can help you to start developing a better eye for detail, a skill that will make you better in every task. And, as you notice the small things around you, you’ll begin to see all the good, beautiful, and wonderful in your life!

Practice Enjoyment

This is one practice that we can all stand to work on!

We have so much good in our lives: the movies and TV shows we watch, the music we listen to, the games we play, the time we spend with our families, the delicious meals we eat, and the list goes on. Unfortunately, we’ve often grown so accustomed to them that we fail to truly notice them and enjoy them. They’re just one more part of our lives.

Don’t let yourself take those good things for granted. Next time you sit down to a meal, really focus on savoring each bite and tasting each flavor. Take a moment to appreciate the minutes you’re spending playing video games, watching TV, or just sitting around with family. Enjoy every moment you can, and every small moment will be so much more enjoyable!
