Do you have any idea how much time you waste every day? Probably not!

It’s amazing how many things we do that are time-wasters. They may feel like standard parts of our day, but they cost us our most precious resource: our time.

We only have so many seconds, minutes, and hours in our day, so it’s up to us to make the most of them. To do that, cut these ten unnecessary time-wasting activities out of your life:

Gossiping – Gossip is both frivolous and useless, and it wastes a lot of time. Worst of all, it brings no positivity into your life, and can actually be a source of negative energy. Cut it from your life, and spend the time doing something productive—such as helping the people others are gossiping about!

Procrastinating – Procrastinating, or putting things off until later, achieves nothing and helps no one. Not only does it force you to complete the task later—often when you’re more tired, irritable, or stressed—but you actually dread the task more. Stop delaying and live your life by the motto “Do it now.”

Complaining – Complaining not only causes your mind to dwell on negative feelings, but puts them out into your environment, creating negative energy around you. That’s not to say that you should never voice concerns or problems, but don’t waste your time complaining. Instead, put your energy toward fixing whatever is giving you grief.

Sitting in Traffic – How much more time would you have in your day if you didn’t have to sit in traffic? To avoid traffic, you’ll often have to get up and leave earlier in the morning, and wait later in the evening until traffic is clear. You can use that time to hit the gym, practice your hobbies, socialize with friends, or do something more productive than just sitting in your car.

Caveat: The time you spend sitting in traffic can be a good thing if you make good use of it. Listen to a podcast, audiobook, or motivational course. Take the opportunity to call someone you haven’t talked to in a long time. Listen and learn a new skill, language, or hobby. Use the time, and it can actually be one of the best parts of your day!

Worrying – Nothing gets accomplished by worrying, yet it’s amazing how much time people can spend fretting about the past, future, or present. Worry will ruin your sleep, add stress to your life, and make everything more challenging. It’s easier said than done to “just stop worrying”, but it’s worth making an effort to work on it. The less brainpower you spend on worry, the more you have free to focus on solving whatever problems might be causing the worry in the first place.

Engaging with Toxic or Negative People – Try to keep your life as positive as possible, including surrounding yourself with those who bring positivity to your day. Avoid those who complain or gossip a lot, or who drag your mind down with their negativity or toxicity. They’ll just drain your spirit and waste your time!

Watching bad TV and movies – Just because you’re tired or bored in the evening, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to waste your time in front of your television. Make sure that the time you do spend is productive, fruitful, and positive. If the movie or TV show you’re watching doesn’t benefit you or lift your spirit in some way, then don’t waste time on it!

Waiting for Change or Success – Nothing ever gets accomplished by waiting around. If you want to see some change in your life or achieve something great, it’s up to you to get out and make it happen. Even just taking small steps one day at a time will go a long way toward building up to success or making a grand change.

Engaging on Social Media – Social media has become a source of stress, anxiety, fear, and worry, and it rarely brings the sort of social connection-bred positivity it was once believed to. If you are spending a lot of time on social media, pay attention to how you feel afterward—it’s rarely positive. Cut down the amount of time you spend on social media to the absolute minimum. You’ll have much more time to dedicate to other things and feel less negative about your life in comparison to others.

Surfing the Internet – It’s amazing how much time can be wasted down an internet rabbit hole. People spend hours surfing through videos on YouTube, watching clips on TikTok, or Googling random things. The internet can be a dangerous place if you let yourself wander in. Use it for what you need, then get out before it wastes your time.

These are some of the biggest time-wasters in your life! Now that you know to recognize them, it’s up to you to make the change.

How to Make the Most of Your Time in 8 Easy Steps

  1. Do things consciously. Make every action a conscious choice, knowing what it will cost you.

  2. Track your time. Whatever you’re doing—work, play, recreation, hobbies, or relaxing—measure the time spent at those activities so you can keep it all in balance.

  3. Put aside distractions. Turn off your TV, put away your phone, and disconnect from that web browser that might be sapping your time and attention.

  4. Use your downtime more wisely. The time you spend sitting in traffic, riding the bus, standing in line, or even waiting for the elevator can be used to benefit you positively.

  5. Focus on one thing at a time. Multi-tasking leads to problems with attention, easier distractibility, and greater mental drain.

  6. Avoid unnecessary time-wasters. If there’s a better, faster, smarter way to do things, find it!

  7. Finish projects before moving on. You may be surprised by how many “nearly finished” projects you have just piling up.

  8. Say no. Don’t make it your standard answer, but learn to prioritize yourself and your time.
