Is your life filled with happy moments, or does it seem like every day is worse than the one before? Life isn’t always easy, but that doesn’t mean it has to be endless days, weeks, and years of misery and suffering before you “shuffle off this mortal coil.”

“Of course I want to be happy,” you may say, “but look at all the problems and negative things happening to me. How can I be happy?”

There’s no 3-step process to go from utterly miserable to deliriously happy. But there are ways you can attract happiness and positive happenings into your life:

Change Your Outlook

This may sound utterly trite. “Change your outlook to be happier” is one of the most commonly given pieces of advice, and so cliché, right?

Well, think about it: are you the sort of person who automatically sees the “problem” in any situation or the “solution”?

Many of us automatically think in a negative way. We see how something will impede our happiness, or how a situation will definitely turn out badly. Think of yourself as a magnet: if your core is negativity, you’re going to radiate that negative “magnetic field” into the world.

Time to change things up! Stop automatically going the negative route and try to start seeing the positive. Say “yes” to more things without thinking about how they’ll end in disaster. Start looking for the good in every bad situation. Reframe your perspective so you see the happiness instead of the sadness. By changing your core from negative to positive, you start radiating positive energy that will draw happiness and positive happenings toward you.

Speak Positivity

Words are real things. They can put a smile on someone’s face or bring a tear to their eye. They can make a day amazing or ruin an entire month.

A wise man once said, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” If the words from your mouth are always negative, could that mean your heart is negative, too?

Time to start speaking positive! Even if you don’t always feel positive, you can “fake it until you make it.” Make an effort to only let uplifting, inspiring, affirming, and positive words come out of your mouth. Over time, it will come naturally to you because your heart has changed as well.

Best of all, you’ll be known by others as the person who puts positivity out into the world through your words!

Meditate

Meditation is a way to reflect on everything in your life—good and bad. It’s a way of being mindful of the things that happen to you, but it provides you with a chance to reframe your mindset. When you’re relaxed, you can often step back from the emotions of any situation and see it from a detached perspective. You’ll find that things aren’t always as bad as they seem, and there’s almost always a way to bring a positive out of any bad situation. Over time, this mindset will become like second nature to you.

Fill Your Life With Uplifting Things

If you eat junk food, your body will be weak, unhealthy, and function poorly. Eat right, and your muscles will grow, your bones will be strong, and your organs will work at optimum capacity.

Your mind’s the same! What are you filling it with?

Fill your life with things that make you happier and more positive: inspiring music, educational and uplifting podcasts and audiobooks, TV programs and movies that make you think and improve your outlook on the world. Stop wasting your time with “mental junk food”; instead, fill your life with things that lift your mind and spirit.

Stop Trying to Control Everything

Anxiety, negativity, and depression are almost always the result of fear of the future. Our fears that something terrible will happen in the future can put us into a perpetually negative mindset, one that will attract negative happenings in our life.

But let it go! Stop trying to control everything and just let life happen. Fear of the future isn’t going to help you. There’s nothing you can do to stop the bad things from happening in the future. The more you worry about the negative just around the corner, the harder it will be for you to enjoy where you are now.

Be in the present. Focus on the things that are happening to you now—the good as well as the bad. Look for those moments of happiness or those positive thoughts in your present situation. Stop worrying about what you can’t control in the future; enjoy every moment of the present.
