Toxins are, sadly, all too commonplace in our modern lifestyle.
They’re in everything—from our cleaning products to the artificial foods served and sold everywhere to the very air we breathe—and can cause a lot of long-term damage to our bodies. They contribute to disease and health problems, impair internal functions, and can even shorten our lifespans and accelerate biological aging so our internal systems break down and shut down faster.
But only if you let them!
Your body is designed to get rid of toxins—it’s got multiple organs and internal systems dedicated to purging these harmful chemicals from your bloodstream, digestive system, and lungs. Granted, those systems can get overloaded with all the chemicals you’re exposed to on a daily basis. But if you detoxify your life, you’ll give your body a fighting chance at cleaning itself out and restoring healthy function.
Ready for a detox? Below, we’ve compiled seven simple steps you can take to remove toxins from your life and protect your longevity. Put them into action starting today, and you’ll notice visible improvements to your health far faster than you’d expect.
Canned drinks like sodas and iced teas are high in sugar, which can have many toxic effects on your body. High sugar intake can lead to all kinds of longevity-impairing problems, such as [1]:
Higher risk of heart disease
Weight gain and obesity
Metabolic syndrome
Higher blood pressure
Chronic inflammation
Higher heart attack and stroke risk
and the list goes on…
Obviously, it makes sense to cut high-sugar canned beverages out of your life.
But what if we told you that even cutting those out and limiting yourself to drinks like canned soda water or coconut water with no sugar still may not be enough?
The sad truth is that most aluminum cans are lined with BPA, a plastic that protects the food contents from the chemicals in the metal [2]. Unfortunately, BPA can be a problem in itself. The plastic can leach toxins from the internal lining into your liquids. Growing concerns over BPA [3] suggest there may be some link between the plastic and issues with the brain, reproductive glands, and even behavioral issues among children.
The best solution? Get yourself a soda maker! That way, you can make your own carbonated drinks that contain no sugar and aren’t exposed to any BPA-lined cans. You still get all the perks of your favorite drinks but with none of the toxic downsides.
Did you know that food cooked at high temperatures can be terrible for your health?
You see, food cooked at high temperatures is more prone to burning (or charring or crisping, depending on what you’re cooking). The burning process produces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, that are known carcinogens linked to a variety of cancers (including prostate, colon, and breast cancer).
Try turning down the temperature to grill on medium heat as well as avoid burning your food. Or, try baking rather than broiling, cooking in a pan instead of grilling, and sauteing instead of frying or deep frying.
Bonus: Try to find cooking methods that use less oil as well as lower heat. Fried, deep fried, and oily foods will increase your risk of heart attack and stroke, and will contain more inflammatory chemicals that will add to the toxic burden on your body.

While brightly colored natural fruits and veggies are the best thing you can eat on a daily basis, brightly colored artificial foods can be packed with toxins.
It takes food-coloring ingredients to add color to food, and many of those food colorings are known carcinogens. For example, Red 40 and both Yellow 5 and 6 are likely to contain cancer-causing contaminants, including benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl, while the titanium dioxide used to color candy can damage DNA. One more good reason to avoid any food that is highly colored, which typically means they’re highly processed and artificial, too.
If you want to add color to your food (for example, coloring the whipped cream on your child’s birthday cake), consider using all-natural food colorings. Or, just use fruits that provide both color and flavor the natural way.
Dryer sheets may stop static from building up on your clothing and make everything softer and better-smelling, but sadly, they are made with A LOT of chemicals—including chloroform, benzyl acetate, and ethanol. One chemical in dryer sheets, called quaternary ammonium compounds, has been linked to not only skin irritation, but also the possibility of worsening asthma. Not only that, but all the chemicals in your clothing is more likely to be absorbed via your skin into your bloodstream, increasing the toxic load on your body.
Instead of using dryer sheets, use wool dryer ball to reduce static electricity. Wool balls contain no harmful chemicals, but are all-natural and will have the exact same anti-static effect as dryer sheets. If you want a bit of scent, you can always add a few drops of essential oils that will make your clothes smell wonderful without irritating your skin.
Note: To reduce static even further, try adding a bit of white distilled vinegar into your washing machine’s rinse cycle, and reduce the amount of time the clothes spend in the dryer.
Let’s be honest: we’ve all had frozen dinners and microwave meals more often than we’ll admit to others. They’re just so easy, convenient, and sometimes even more affordable than home-cooked meals. In our busy lives, it’s sometimes nice to just have a hassle-free, low-effort meal we can whip up in literally 2-3 minutes.
Unfortunately, these foods can be pretty terrible for our health. First of all, they’re packaged in plastic containers that are likely to contain the carcinogen BPA. When you run them through the microwave, the heat can cause the plastic particles to leach into your food. You’re literally putting the toxins into your own body when you eat that food.
But that’s not all. The food itself is also more likely to be artificial, processed, and filled with chemicals. In order to keep them as delicious as possible even in their frozen state, they’re loaded with preservatives and flavorings. Plus, they’re also way higher in sodium and sugar than your average meal.
Put all that together, and you’ve got a significantly higher risk of toxins, lower nutritional value, and an increased chance of long-term health problems.
All the more reason to cook your meals using fresh, natural ingredients!
While home-cooking is far less convenient and potentially more expensive, you’re far less likely to be exposed to toxins. You also have full control over the nutritional value of your meals, which is necessary for good health.
You can still pack your own meals to take to work; just make sure to bring them in a glass container that won’t leach toxins when heated up.
While gas space heaters typically produce more heat and can warm a room more effectively, they generate toxic carbon monoxide and other air pollutants that are released into your air. When you inhale the carbon monoxide and pollutants, it can increase the amount of toxins absorbed into your body via your lungs [4], which can contribute to asthma, respiratory conditions, heart disease, lung cancer, and other health issues.
During the summer, this may not seem like a problem because your windows are open and lots of fresh air is blowing in. But when your house is all closed up against the winter, those toxins can hang around for hours, days, or even weeks at a time.
On the other hand, electric heaters don’t release toxins like carbon monoxide or pollutants. They’re not only the cleaner choice, but they’re also less likely to contribute to long-term health problems like gas heaters will.
There are lots of natural substances that can kill off bugs, pests, insects, and weeds that won’t harm your health. On the other hand, pesticides and insecticides can be incredibly potent and dangerous, filled with toxins that can do serious damage to your internal organs. Stay natural, stay safe.
It’s time to rewire your brain regarding the toxins in your life!
As you saw by our list above, most of the changes required to reduce toxin exposure will be inexpensive and far from demanding, but they can have a massive positive impact on your life. They can decrease your toxic load, give your body a fighting chance at detoxifying itself, reduce potential health risks, and in doing so, protect your longevity.
It’s worth the small amount of effort required to change your life, because in the long term, you will reap the benefits in the form of a longer, healthier life. That’s a bargain absolutely worth making!
